What real estate associations or organizations are you a member of? CREW, CCIM; an investor, board member and/or advisor to several Fintech startups, including Space in the Raw and CapWay.
How have you navigated obstacles to achieve success in your career? I run on multiple tracks at once, never trusting just one path to get me where I want to end up. I am never afraid to kick in doors and say, “Oops, wrong room!” Some of my best adventures started that way.
How do you play your strengths to your advantage in your career? I research and get expert input. Then follow my gut. My instincts, once informed, are very strong. The key is knowing that about yourself.
What trends are you seeing so far this year? I put myself through college by programming for a Neural Networks project and thought I would never be much more than a geek looking for a management job. Then I created a tech company and sold it, but again stepped off the expected path by using proceeds to buy a portfolio of real estate and began historic redevelopment in urban cores. At every step I was following my instincts, but feared that those disparate interests might prevent me from having real success. Now 2017 is the Year for Fintech, and commercial real estate is waking up to its tech opportunities. My passions have merged! Ten-X and others are disrupting CRE by helping properties sell at a faster pace with lower costs and greater transparency. It’s very exciting.
What do you do for fun? Dog sledding in places like the Boundary Waters. I love tech and CRE, but there’s nothing like the great outdoors.
