Recently I read supreme court justice Clarence Thomas’ rich reflections on the “unplanned syllabus” of his youth on a farm. He connected hard work to self- sufficiency. In a broader context, he saw the functioning of a thriving neighborhood related to the small gestures of neighbors: his Grandmother dividing dinner for an unplanned guest, neighbors helping his family remove crops before a storm, Nuns who believed in him, and a librarian bringing books to Mass so he would have reading books on his farm. “We watched and learned what it means to be a good person, good neighbor and good citizen. Who will be watching you and what will you be teaching them?”
