According to JMH Development, a leading New York-based real estate developer, in partnership with Madison Estates, The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) granted unanimous approval for its five-story condo project at 70 Henry St., site of the former Brooklyn Heights Cinema. The LPC, responsible for regulating and protecting N.Y.C.'s architecturally, historically and culturally significant sites, previously rejected two sets of plans by the site's former owners. The newly approved design, created by architect of record, Morris Adjmi, preserves the exterior of the existing building that dates back to 1896. "It's a rare accomplishment to receive unanimous approval from The LPC," said Jason Halpern, founding partner of JMH Development. "Their support is a testament to the creativity and diligence we have put into restoring and upgrading the historical foundation of this project." JMH acquired the site with partner Madison Estates in November 2014 for $7.5 million, together planning a boutique development to enrich the highly sought-after historic district. The developers are also behind the successful, and sold out, Cobble Hill project, The Townhouses of Cobble Hill. Brooklyn Heights, a district offering a wide array of shopping and dining options, is also home to other culturally significant institutions including the Brooklyn Historical Society and the New York Transit Museum.
