Dr. Heather Rothenberg has joined Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE) as a senior transportation engineer, with an emphasis on traffic safety studies and research. She is based out of the firm's Washington, D.C. office and works with Richard Retting, director of safety + research.
Rothenberg brings fifteen years of leadership and management experience in transportation organizations, including business development, strategic planning, project management, performance monitoring, and personnel management. Prior to joining SSE, Rothenberg previously worked at the FHWA Office of Safety where she served as a data and policy analyst with a focus on compilation of quantitative and qualitative information to inform development, implementation, and evaluation of federal aid highway safety programs. She has also worked for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the University of Massachusetts Traffic Safety Research Program, and the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center.

Rothenberg is active in the Transportation Research Board, where she serves as co-chair of the Women's Issues in Transportation Committee and Member of the Transportation Policy Section. She has received numerous awards, including the Jane F. Garvey Award for Outstanding Woman in Transportation, University of Massachusetts (2013) and the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary's Award (2013, 2010).
Rothenberg holds PhD and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a BS degree in Sociology from Smith College.
