New York, NY Lendlease, Ennead and Ewing Cole, Northwell Health and local leaders broke ground on the Northwell Medical Pavilion at Third Ave. and E. 77th St. This outpatient care facility will be anchored by innovative cancer care programs led by the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, and also include neuroscience services and cardiac care among a host of other medical specialties.
Lendlease is serving as the construction manager and the architects are Ennead and Ewing Cole.
Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at Third Ave. between East 76th and East 77th Sts., the new 200,000 s/f facility, slated to open in the fall of 2025, will increase access to specialty care for New Yorkers and make world-class care more accessible by bringing Northwell’s unique and wide range of top-ranked expertise areas all in one place. Northwell announced the project after presenting it to community members.
“We break ground today on a new medical resource that will improve how New Yorkers access comprehensive, multidisciplinary care,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell. “The Northwell Medical Pavilion will provide our patients with the level of care they deserve, connecting them with their specialized team of medical experts all in one central location.”
The complex will provide care for numerous cancer types, including breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, gynecologic oncology, head and neck, neurosurgery and thoracic. Surgery and inpatient care in Manhattan will continue to be provided by other Northwell hospitals, including neighboring Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital.
“As we break ground on this new specialized center, we are also breaking ground on a much more efficient and innovative way to take care of our patients,” said Richard Barakat, MD, physician-in-chief and director of Cancer at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute.
“Our outstanding teams of clinicians and experts will be able to bring innovative new approaches to cancer care at our new location. With this singular location for Northwell cancer care, our team of medical specialists can work together under the same roof, and bring new multidisciplinary approaches to care in a more efficient way.”
Additional services offered in the building will include imaging and lab testing – as well as holistic wellness services, acute and chronic disease management, social work services and more. Northwell providers will use a single electronic medical record for individual patients to ensure seamless access to medical records across offices for timely decision-making.
“By offering multidisciplinary care for patients in one location, we can create a more seamless and convenient experience for our patients,” said Jill Kalman, MD, Northwell’s chief medical officer. “The ability to consolidate care and services, especially for cancer treatment and women’s heart health, reduces the impact of patients’ medical needs on their quality of life overall. This facility will also allow clinical practices to grow and right-size to meet the increasing demands of health care for future generations.”
Key program elements of the new pavilion include:
• An innovative design for building infrastructure that will leverage technology to create a seamless patient experience, with a lobby that feels more like a living room than a doctor’s office.
- Patient and care-giver centered consultation rooms that will enable our multidisciplinary teams of doctors to bring the best care possible directly to our patients.
- A neuroscience program, offering both neurology and neurosurgery comprehensive care services to care for our patients undergoing treatment for a broad spectrum of conditions.
- Medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology care, including 30 infusion chairs, a CT simulator and 2 Linear Accelerators.
- Access to Northwell’s network of cutting-edge research efforts and innovation through cancer research and clinical trials conducted by the Cancer Institute.
- A cardiothoracic surgery program, which is rated one of the best in NYS for delivering superior outcomes for patients receiving cardiac surgery and offering expertise in a wide variety of surgical procedures.
- Comprehensive advanced cardiac programs — including a program dedicated to women’s heart health — offering a full range of services, from education and risk factor management to the most advanced technology for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of all cardiac conditions including those associated with side effects of cancer treatments.
- Resources to address disparities in cancer care, with programs focused on endometrial cancer, triple-negative breast cancer and other cancers that most affect women and people of color.
- A facility that includes carbon reduction initiatives and other high green standards to provide the healthiest building we can offer for our patients, staff, visitors and the community.
As an integral part of Northwell’s 21-hospital network – and New York’s largest primary and specialty care ambulatory network – the new facility will complement Northwell’s services in Manhattan at Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and Lenox Health Greenwich Village. The $450 million project will be funded through a combination of philanthropy, credit and investment.

The services at the pavilion will continue to expand Northwell’s impact on clinical care and employment in New York City. Currently, Northwell provides care to two million patients annually – including approximately 19,000 new cancer patients – more than any other health care provider in the state. About 42% of Northwell’s total new cancer patients live in New York City. Northwell employs more than 26,000 team members in the New York City region and the overarching system contributes more than $2.7 billion in total benefits to the community, including community health programs, training for health professionals and COVID-19 response efforts.
