Lend Lease will host Urban Green Council's Wednesday Technical Roundtable: Toxicity and Building Materials - Transparency and Disclosure
on December 7 from 8 to 9 a.m. The event will be held at Lend Lease's 200 Park Ave.
You can easily find out how many calories are in a particular kind of breakfast cereal, along with its sodium, sugar, and fat content, since the information is readily available on the side of the box. But we rarely know in detail what is in the products that make up the buildings we design and occupy since there is no equivalent to a FDA label for construction materials. But several groups are working to put information about the contents and environmental and health impacts of building products in the hands of specifiers.
Urban Green Council will present two such endeavors. One initiative is an on-product "nutrition" label created by Perkins+Will and manufacturer Construction Specialties. The other — the Health Product Declaration — is a voluntary and open standard format being developed by the HPD Working Group, an association of experts convened by the Materials Research Collaborative, a joint initiative of Healthy Building Network and BuildingGreen, Inc.

* Bill Walsh, founder and executive director, Healthy Building Network: Walsh has provided the long-term vision for the Healthy Building Network since the organization's founding in early 2000. Previously he coordinated the Energy, Forest, and Toxic Campaigns of Greenpeace USA and held staff attorney positions with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group and the Institute for Public Representation of Georgetown University Law Center.
* Peter Syrett, AIA, LEED AP, associate principal, Perkins+Will Syrett: Syrett leads the sustainability efforts of Perkins+Will's New York office, helping project teams look beyond LEED and consider the larger ecological picture. He was instrumental in creation of the firm's Precautionary List, the architectural industry's first major list of substances to avoid using in building design.
