Join the Suffolk Chapter of NYS Society of CPAs

Over the past 40 years, the Suffolk Chapter of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) has offered CPAs a forum to share ideas, attend timely continuing education meetings and network with bankers, attorneys, and other professionals. The organization has also been active in the local community. For the past 15 years, the chapter's Toys for Tots program (a part of the Marine Corps' Annual Toys for Tots Drive) has grown to encompass drop off sites in Nassau, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, in addition to Suffolk, with over 100 businesses participating. The drive begins in November and continues through mid-December. The chapter's construction contractors and real estate committee should be of particular interest to professionals working in that industry. This committee meets to discuss issues impacting the industry such as the recent Financial Accounting Standards Board's (FASB) exposure draft on lease accounting which intends to remove the distinction between capital and operating leases. Upcoming meetings will focus on sales tax issues affecting construction contractors and the financing opportunities available to contractors. The committee recently held a breakfast meeting at Marcum LLP's offices in Melville to discuss "Sales Tax Pitfalls & the Construction Contractor." The Suffolk Chapter is certainly an active group and would like to encourage professionals in the real estate and construction industry to attend our upcoming committee meetings. For more information on the various technical meetings and networking events being planned by the Suffolk Chapter of the NYSSCPA, please contact me at [email protected]. Paul Becht, CPA, is the president of the Suffolk Chapter of the New York State Society of CPAs, Long Island, N.Y.

The evolving relationship of environmental consultants and the lending community - by Chuck Merritt

When Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) were first part of commercial real estate risk management, it was the lenders driving this requirement. When a borrower wanted a loan on a property, banks would utilize a list of “Approved Consultants” to order the report on both refinances and purchases.
