Join SMPS-LI in celebrating its seventh year as a chapter

SMPS-LI celebrating 7th year as a chapter and continues its dedication to advocate for, educate, and connect leaders in the building industry. SMPS-LI has an outstanding lineup of programs for the 2010-2011 program year. During our program planning sessions, members of the board and committees developed a list of topics that would be relevant to the current economic climate and present opportunities to the attendees to "take something back" by having the ability to apply information given at events to their respective jobs. We kicked off our year by having SMPS national president, Carolyn Ferguson, join us at one of our networking events and lead a session that gave attendees helpful hints on getting on the shortlist. In addition we hosted a session that offered time-tested strategies on maximizing trade show participation (either as an attendee or exhibitor). Recently, we had a very successful program that featured representatives from four colleges on Long Island; attendees learned about various projects, trends as well as advice for future proposal submission. Future events include networking events, a holiday party, educational programs and client panel discussions. Our next event will be our Canstruction Reception taking place on October 28 at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Details about upcoming events can be found at www.smpsli.org along with corresponding registration links. For those of you not familiar with SMPS - The Society for Marketing Professional Services - we are a group of marketing professionals dedicated to the built environment. Our members span all aspects of designers, construction and real estate professionals, industry accountants, attorneys and engineers. As president, my goal for this year is to increase the benefits of one's membership to SMPS; our theme for this year is "Grow with SMPS." I encourage each member to become more active. By being an active member, you are more than a statistic. You can contribute your time to a committee, your knowledge to a subject matter, and your friendship to your fellow colleagues. Please visit us on the web at www.smpsli.org to learn about the organization, our committees and upcoming events. I look forward to meeting you. Liz O'Rourke Kupcha, CPSM is president of SMPS Long Island and is president of Kupcha Marketing Services, Amity Harbor, N.Y.

The evolving relationship of environmental consultants and the lending community - by Chuck Merritt

When Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) were first part of commercial real estate risk management, it was the lenders driving this requirement. When a borrower wanted a loan on a property, banks would utilize a list of “Approved Consultants” to order the report on both refinances and purchases.
