6,857 s/f music studio space for lease at Lee Building; Owned by Giscombe Realty Group

A historic music recording studio in Harlem is up for lease at the iconic Lee Building on 125th St. Giscombe Realty Group, which owns the Lee Building, has put the fully sound proof 6,857 s/f studio on the market. It features several rooms for recording, editing and sound effects, as well as a kitchen and office space. It occupies part of the sixth floor of the 12-story, 1901 building located on the corner of Park Avenue, next to the Metro North station. The most recent tenant of the space was Grammy award winning sound engineers Stadiumred which recently moved out after being there since 2007. Past tenants included famous jazz musician, composer Ornette Coleman, who was known for his innovative saxophone compositions as well as his notable violin and trumpet renditions. Coleman was one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement of the 1960s. His son Denardo Coleman, an acclaimed jazz drummer and producer, later occupied the legendary space. "The building and studio have a great history... there is a music spirit alive here and it speaks to those in the music industry," said Giscombe Realty Broker Holley Drakeford. "Great jazz permeates the walls." The studio was acoustically modernized in 2008 and is now asking $35.00 per square foot. The approximate annual rent is $263,994, according to Drakeford. "The fact that is located in Harlem is a huge plus,' adds Drakeford. "Musicians love coming to Harlem and being part of the music made here." Stadiumred clients, many of whom recorded at the Lee Building studio were associated with 10 Grammy Awards and a some 19 nominations. They include: top level hip hop artists like, Ludacris, Wyclef Jean, Nicky Minaj, Drake, Eminem, Mya, Mos Def, Jeremy Carr, Chris Brown and others like Yo-Yo Ma, The Chicago and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, Melonie Fiona and others who used the studio to record major record labels with Warner Brothers Music, Atlantic, Universal /Motown/ Sony BMG, Capitol Records, Geffen, EMI, Epic and Triple Crown Records.
