Hauppauge, NY The U.S. Green Building Council – Long Island Chapter (USGBC-LI) hosted their monthly presentation featuring key issues in green building, titled the Green Scene, on September 13th at The Molloy College Suffolk Center, 7180 Republic Airport Rd.  from 6 to 8  p.m. The USGBC-LI hosts monthly Green Scenes to provide educational programs for local municipalities, building industry professionals, and interested residents throughout Long Island.

The September Green Scene featured Lauren Hildebrand, LEED AP BD+C, senior sustainability consultant, Steven Winter Associates. Hildebrand’s presentation “The LI Green Update: Certifications, Codes, Incentives and Case Studies” highlighted the exceptional work she has done to plan, design and construct LEED buildings throughout Long Island. One of the building projects she discussed was the Garvies Point development in Glen Cove. She is the LEED AP BD+C consultant for Garvies Point, and is responsible for completing all the necessary steps and procedures for it to achieve a LEED Silver certification.

LEED certified buildings put an emphasis on clean energy, efficient construction, reducing environmental toxins, and planning land use sustainably. Daniel Busi, manager of the USGBC-LI chapter, said, “Lauren’s informative presentation about LEED buildings on Long Island explained why developers should build accordingly under these guidelines, and how the effects of LEED building benefit every stakeholder involved.”

“Long Island is positioned perfectly to construct LEED buildings, and I believe it’s time we make every possible effort to develop as such,” Busi said.

The next USGBC-LI Green Scene will take place on October 24that the Molloy College Suffolk Center. This Green Scene will feature a presentation by Habitat for Humanity on a home they are constructing in Mastic Beach and how volunteers can get involved. This home will be equipped with a solar panel array, geothermal piping, and an advanced nitrogen-removing wastewater treatment septic system.
