The Kam Man Food Corp.'s solar energy system installation project - Queens, NY

Helios Energy Systems (www.helioses.com) has completed a solar energy system installation project for a leading ethnic supermarket chain's distribution facility in Maspeth. The 35,000 s/f warehouse facility now operates a 101-kW solar energy system that will generate electricity for the building's refrigeration requirements, greatly reducing its overall electricity costs and dependence on the regional utility company. Helios, a subsidiary of fenestration manufacturer Crystal Window & Door Systems, worked with The Kam Man Food Corp. to coordinate the assessment, design, equipment and installer selection for a suitable photovoltaic (PV) system to meet the building's energy needs.
The Kam Man Food Corp. is a major international Asian food supermarket chain which established operations in the U.S. in 1972 and now operates stores in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

The solar project involved the installation of 442 solar PV panels and associated electrical hardware on the roof of the warehouse to generate 101 kilowatts of electricity. "We were able to show the executives of Kam Man Foods how our solar panel system would be able to save the company substantially on its electricity bills," said Andrew Lai, Helios Project Manager.

Helios' staff performed preliminary assessments of the warehouse and assembled the professional team to design, supply and install the new solar energy system for the project. Quad State Solar of Plainview, NY, a licensed general contractor and solar installation specialist, was engaged to install the system. Quad State Solar is recognized by several government agencies in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania as an approved solar installation contractor, and is certified with several alternative energy trade associations as a contractor and installation instructor.

Centrosolar America was selected to supply the solar panels and inverters. Centrosolar has supplied countless solar projects throughout Europe since 2007 and has expanded in the US with facilities in California, Arizona and New Jersey.

A newly developed roof rack system which significantly reduces installation time and complexity was supplied by Renusol America, a subsidiary of Renusol GmbH of Germany. The racking system is made of 100% recycled high molecular weight polyethylene, accommodates all common solar PV panel modules and avoids roof penetrations through the use of ballast weights.

"Helios ensured the process moved smoothly, assisting the customer every step of the way from initial design through final approvals and start-up," noted Mr. Lai. "Helios continues to demonstrate to customers just how attainable solar energy is, and how beneficial it can be for their bottom line."
