During the last 10 years of your career, which professional accomplishment, honor or achievement has meant the most to you and why?
My greatest achievement so far has been a lead I brought in for a blockfront office building. It is the largest property valuation the company has ever done. Ownership has not made a decision yet, but regardless of what happens it was a great experience.
Which project, deal or transaction was the "game changer" in the advancement of your career during the last 10 years?
My game changer was my first sale. Within my first 7 months at Massey Knakal I brought in a multifamily townhouse in Chelsea. It was a sale that we had to close quickly, and was a bit of a juggling act because the owner needed the sale in order to close on another property which we advised him on. We ended up doing a direct transaction as a result of an open house, in which the buyer just happened to walk by on his way to another!
How do you contribute to your company and / or the industry?
I believe my contributions are my passion and drive to succeed both as an individual and as a team member. Massey Knakal is very team oriented, so it's hard not to contribute when you have your entire company behind you.
What advice would you give to women just starting out in commercial real estate?
I still consider myself just starting out in the industry. I would have to share the same advice that has been given to me from men and women in the industry, which is to get involved, ask questions, reach out to those you know in the industry, and continue to learn.
How do you manage the work / life balance?
You have to do what works for you. I think everyone needs to find time in their day for "me" time, which for me is getting in a workout. I was an avid athlete all through college and it's not as easy to get in a workout anymore, but 15 minutes is better than nothing! Also, my weekends are strictly reserved for family and friends. It's the only time we get to catch up properly.
Who or what has been the strongest influence on your career and why?
My parents have been and continue to be the strongest influence on my career. My mom is an eternal optimist, which is great when I face obstacles. My dad is also in sales, and he has been a great motivator for me knowing how he started out and got to be where he is today.
How are you using social media to promote yourself and/or your firm?
We actively use LinkedIn and Twitter to advertise listings, share market information, and build relationships old and new.
Where would you like to be 10 years from today?
I hope to be an established and well respected broker known for my good, hard and honest work.
