Green and Building Information Modeling (BIM)

As the building industry evolves, so do the tools of the trade. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one of the tools that are redefining the industry. What sets BIM apart from using conventional CAD, is that the design teams are able to see how all the systems and structural elements will work together in a real-time application. This allows for both synergies and errors to be spotted before construction has even begun. With the increase of green buildings constructed, this provides a great opportunity to maximize their sustainable potential. In addition to general benefits of using BIM, it also is a superior tool for daylighting calculations, energy analysis, material quantities, and can directly influence and calculate various LEED credits. It's only a matter of time before all projects will be using BIM, and it is evident its attributes are crucial for an optimal design in the green building sector. Although BIM is not new to the industry, its relationship with the green building design is now in the spotlight.
