Eldor Contracting energizes fifth Suffolk County solar carport; works with EDF Renewable Energy

Eldor Contracting Corp., one of the New York-Tri-State area's largest electrical construction and renewable energy companies, has completed the fifth solar carport in its 12.82-megawatt (MW), 45,000 solar module project located in Suffolk County. Eldor was brought on board the expansive solar carport project by EDF Renewable Energy, formerly enXco, a leader in renewable energy. The installations required Eldor's turnkey construction management, general contracting and electrical contracting services, as well as its widely-recognized value engineering capabilities. The company's responsibilities in this $65 million renewable energy project-among the nation's largest solar carport installations-also include the commissioning, telemetry and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) activities for gathering real time data to monitor, analyze and control environmental conditions at the installations. According to Eldor project manager Keith Feldmann, "The Suffolk County solar carports include our rigging into place: 22, 500-kw inverters, 22 medium-voltage step-up transformers, and seven medium-voltage switchgear lineups. We have been working closely with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) to effectively coordinate the interconnection of the medium-voltage switchgear to the power grid." Being constructed on public properties in Suffolk County, the solar PV facilities are being interconnected to LIPA's grid. The energy produced by EDF Renewable Energy will then be purchased by LIPA. To date, Eldor has completed four solar carports at the Brentwood train station, H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge, Suffolk County's North County Complex in Hauppauge, and a Suffolk County owned-building in Riverhead. Currently under construction are solar carports at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip and the Deer Park train station.
