Clyne of HKCC honored by Long Island Business News
Long Island Business News is honoring Kevin Clyne, a partner in the law firm of Herman Katz Cangemi & Clyne LLP (HKCC), with a Leadership in Law Award.
Clyne, a property tax certiorari lawyer, is to receive the award in the partner category at a gala awards dinner sponsored by the regional business publication on November 13th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The award recognizes individuals who have exhibited dedication, skill, tenacity, excellence and compassion in both the legal profession and in the community.
"It is, indeed, an honor to be a part of this elite group of attorneys who provide superior advocacy on behalf of their clients while also serving their communities," said Clyne.
With 15 years of experience in the areas of property tax and eminent domain litigation, Clyne has achieved a distinctive track record, prosecuting the valuation of diverse commercial property types. He has developed a reputation as a vigilant advocate for his clients' interests throughout NYS, and across the country.
Clyne has handled property tax and eminent domain matters on every level, from negotiation and compromise with municipalities, to trial and through the appellate process. Recently, he represented several big box stores challenging their property taxes in upstate New York by utilizing a percentage of gross sales income capitalization approach, a methodology of first impression in New York (First impression is a case in which a question of interpretation of law is presented that never before had arisen in any reported case). These upstate decisions resulted in millions of dollars of property tax relief for his client, and since then the decisions have been relied upon as precedent for resolving valuation disputes throughout New York and the country.
Clyne is on the Tax Certiorari and Condemnation Committees of bar associations in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties and the City of New York. He is a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), a national property tax professionals group. Clyne presented before an IPT national symposium in November 2012 on the review and use of draft appraisals in litigation, calling upon his extensive trial experience. As a member of the Annual Property Tax Symposium committee, he oversees various experts' presentations on nationally significant issues involving property taxes. He is a former board member of the New York Condemnation Conference and has lectured on property tax law at Hofstra law school.
Clyne also co-chaired Action Long Island's Housing Task Force, spearheading efforts to create affordable, downtown housing opportunities for young people.
He is a vice president and board member of Advancement for Commerce, Industry and Technology (ACIT) and co-chair of ACIT's annual golf tournament. He is also a member of the Long Island Real Estate Group.
Clyne is a resident of Bethpage, where he lives with his wife and two children. He is also a member of the golf committee of the Hagedorn Little Village School, which serves special needs children, and he actively advances the cause of supported employment for disabled individuals through his work as an Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD) Residential Support Program volunteer and member of ACLD's golf committee. Clyne has a deep connection to the special needs community as the father of a child with autism.
A 1999 graduate of Hofstra University School of Law, where he was on the Law Review, Clyne was graduated cum laude from Loyola College of Maryland in 1996.
Previously, he was named to Long Island Business News' 40-under-40 Class of 2012.
