City leaders celebrate completion of $300,000 restoration of Mount Hope Cemetery Gatehouse
Department of Recreation and Youth Services commissioner Charles Reaves and deputy commissioner JudieLynn McAvinney joined other city officials and members of the Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery at a ceremony to celebrate the completion of a $300,000 renovation of Mt. Hope Cemetery's 874 Gatehouse.
The stone gatehouse was originally designed by Andrew Jackson Warner, one of the most prominent upstate architects of the late 19th century. It originally served as the cemetery office and now is used for interior exhibition space and serves as headquarters and meeting space for the Friends of Mt. Hope.
The renovation included the replacement and the slate roof and marble tile at the portico and foyer, along with other exterior repairs. The work was performed by the Leo J. Roth Corp., and the design was completed by the City's Division of Engineering and Architectural Services. The project cost $313,049, including the help of a $150,000 matching grant from the NYS Environmental Protection Fund.
