The commercial management industry's professional designations, created by the Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI) — the RPA, FMA, SMA and SMT—continue to be the prime building blocks of a successful property management career and provide a well-documented pathway to professional success.
BOMA/NY is at the forefront of assisting those with financial needs to achieve that success through its Scholarship Program, and all applications for the scholarships must now be completed and received by BOMA/NY by July 31st. The scholarships are generous, and cover the value of seven BOMI courses per designation area—or more than 75% of the cost of obtaining a designation, provided the recipient adheres to all the requirements.
Determining who receives a scholarship is a three-part process conducted by the BOMA/NY scholarship committee led by Gail Duke, RPA/CPM of NY Life Investment Management, LLC. The three-decade-old program has funded more than 215 students to date.
How does one apply? Who qualifies? And how are the scholarships awarded? Here's a quick overview:
Potential recipients must be employed by a BOMA/NY member firm, work within the five boroughs of New York City and have passed at least one BOMI course in any designation area.
All applicants are evaluated on their application form information, which includes: 1. A letter of recommendation from their supervisor; 2. An essay stating their goals and why they should be considered for a scholarship; and 3. The in-person interview, which delves into how the candidates will use the scholarship to further their goals and career plans.
The scholarships also cover courses taken via home study or the accelerated class method, as well as book, exam and processing fees.
Those winning a scholarship must pass each course before taking the next, and complete the full designation within four years of winning the scholarship.
To apply, hopeful scholars can go to www.bomany.org/education/scholarship-application/to download the form, and send it when completed to BOMA/NY as directed on the form by July 31st. Anyone with questions can contact BOMA/NY's director of education, Mary Sorgente, directly at (212) 239-3662 or
