Mc Gowan to renovate Nightingale-Bamford: Aimed for LEED Silver

Mc Gowan has been awarded a $25 million construction project to renovate the existing 90,000 s/f education facility and add 20,000 s/f of expansion space for the Nightingale-Bamford School, a K-12 preparatory school. Mc Gowan serves as general contractor for the project to modernize the existing building and add the additional s/f from two four-story townhouses adjacent to the main school building located on the Upper East Side at 20 East 92nd St. The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2016.
The proposed project scope includes Mc Gowan's integration of the new 20,000 s/f into the existing floors of the main building. Adding the space contained in the two adjacent townhouses entails first shoring up the existing landmarked building façades and portions of the townhouses' side walls during construction. Mc Gowan will replace these areas with new structures and floor framing consistent with the main building in elevation and install new lower level areas in the rear of the building area, in addition to cleaning and restoring the townhouses' front façades. Mc Gowan will complete the new spaces with a comprehensive fit out and installation of finishes.
The Nightingale-Bamford School project has been designed to attain LEED Silver certification. The project architect is BRB Architects and they have specified many environmentally-conscious materials, including green rooftops, the re-use of storm water drainage for irrigation, energy-efficient mechanical systems and locally-sourced materials. Levien and Company serves as the owner's representative and provides project management services.
In addition to the 20,000 s/f expansion project, Mc Gowan will renovate 88,600 s/f of space within the main school building. To complete the renovation without disrupting school operations, it is most critical that the Mc Gowan project team perform construction in the school's main building only when the school is not in session. Therefore, during each of the two phases of the project when work is being performed in the school's main building, it's imperative that all renovation work be completed within a strict nine-week schedule. The Mc Gowan team completed phase one of the main building renovation on schedule.
This educational facility is located within the Carnegie Hill Historic District of Manhattan, and the project is therefore subject to review and approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Mc Gowan has a demonstrated project expertise working on and in landmarked buildings.
Mc Gowan was selected for this project given the firm's previous experience with the construction of educational and community facilities in New York City. The firm's ability to adhere to tight, phased project schedules and budgets make the firm uniquely qualified to deliver impressive results for academic institutions, which operate within specific academic calendars and often are organizing projects within specific budgets for capital improvements. Mc Gowan's most recent educational construction projects include a landmarked school on Governors Island, a Marymount School, Innovate Charter School and SL Green's Street Squash Center.
