The River Street Lofts was designed with the young, Gen Y or millennial, professional in mind. The property, located at 172-176 River St., is one of the first to incorporate green energy and green building techniques in the city.
"They are looking for housing that features the latest amenities and convenience. They will expect high-speed Internet, air conditioning, laundry in-unit, while wanting to have bars, cafés and other social outlets within walking distance," said Thomas Rossi, one of the principals of Redburn Development Cos. LLC, the developer of the property.
The lofts are modern and spacious with high-end amenities like granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, yet retain the character of the old building with the original hardwood floors and street facing, arched windows. The urban style echoes the feel of lofts in Brooklyn, Hoboken and lower Manhattan. Rossi and his development partner, John Blackburn, chose a location close to popular bars and restaurants. Residents will also be able to enjoy a few venues right in the building; a café and lounge will be opening shortly.
The choice to refurbish one of the city's historical buildings, rather than build new, speaks to Rossi and Blackburn's commitment to reduce waste and create an environmentally friendly living community. The partners engineered a proprietary energy management system involving rooftop solar panels that will provide 40% of the required power. A focus on using high-efficiency appliances, lighting and heating/cooling systems was important to everyone involved.
"We're taking a long-term view," said Rossi. "I know that John and I share this, but I also think a lot of our generation really does care about the environment and sustainability. Even if it does cost just a little more money, a little more time, to do something that is going to make a real difference, it's kind of silly not to."
According to Sunrise Management & Consulting, The River Street Loft's management company, the apartments are renting quickly with only a few of the 21 to rent still available.
