2024 Women in CRE: Megan Schmitt, DeSimone Consulting Engineering

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?

My dream was always to look out over the skyline and point out where I’d added to it. The first time I was able to do that was on 184 Morgan, a high-rise residential tower in Jersey City that topped out during COVID. It was the first project I’d run on my own and, I believe, a pivotal point in my career. Managing the project helped me become more confident as an engineer and drove me to excel in every project thereafter. I’m incredibly proud of that building and all the others I’ve helped add to the skyline since.

What are the most important factors young women should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with?

They say “it’s the people that make the place,” and I think this is the most important factor to consider when choosing a firm to build your career. Find a company that fosters mentorship and collaboration, where coworkers are invested in your success as much as their own. Look for an environment that encourages questions without judgment and provides opportunities to gain well-rounded, hands-on experience and opportunities for growth. Since you’ll spend much of your life at work, choose a company where you are valued, that supports your development, and empowers you to do the same for future engineers.
