USGBC Long Island names 2013 scholarship winners at awards brunch on May 19th

The United States Green Building Council Long Island Chapter (USGBC-LI) has named the winners of its 2013 Scholarship Program at an awards brunch on May 19th at the Carlyle-on-the-Green. Four scholarships totaling $5,000 were awarded to Long Island high school graduates. Students provided their high school transcripts, a letter of recommendation and a required essay on "What can be done to enhance sustainability in your school or community? How do you plan to continue to make an impact after graduating high school?" Additionally, a response was required to one of two essay topics regarding aspects of LEED and building green, and how these practices may impact the future. The scholarship recipients were: * Platinum Scholarship: $2,000 Steven Trezza, West Hempstead HS * Gold Scholarship: $1,500 Caitlin Penny, Mattituck HS * Silver Scholarship: $1,000 Christina Colletti, Manhasset HS * Certified Scholarship: $500 Daniel Clayton, Uniondale HS Tammy Cunha, LEED AP, treasurer of USGBC LI said, "Education is the basis of all we know and thus leads to all things possible. It is education that provides an understanding of LEED and its many benefits to the world, as it exists today and in the future. Education is at the forefront of USGBC-LI's vision. USGBC-LI is very proud to recognize these Long Island high school students who are not only exceptional students of academia, but students with a passion for sustainability and a desire to make this world a better place. These students are the essence of the USGBC-LI's mission."
