USGBC-LI honors Dowling of North Shore LIJ Health System

It is with great pride that our chapter honors Michael Dowling, president and CEO, North Shore LIJ Health System at our 2010 Gala this month. Dowling's decision that all current and future construction be guided by a commitment to achieve LEED Certification validates the message that we have been advocating for so long; when you build green - everyone profits. The North Shore-LIJ Health System is the nation's third-largest, non-profit secular health system with nearly 5,000 beds and a total workforce of about 38,000 employees. Hospitals, due to the 24/7 nature of operations, are some of the biggest users of our shared resources. By choosing products wisely, being judicious in their use of water and by becoming significantly more energy efficient, not only will the natural environment benefit greatly, but the Health System will further profit from the savings. By focusing attention on the quality of the indoor environment, the Health System has made a measurable difference in the healing and health of the thousands of patients, visitors, doctors, nurses, and administration that are affected each and every day by this positive change. To the extent that this creates a healthier environment, more conducive to healing and more pleasing and productive to work in, it will also build value and market share. The USGBC-LI's core purpose is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life. Dowling clearly shares our vision. We continue to focus on bringing this message and these values to all our fellow Long Islanders. Please consider becoming an active participant in our chapter, so that we may expand our reach and truly succeed in our Mission. There are so many opportunities and areas to become personally involved in. Corporate support is also welcome. We are a volunteer organization made up of dedicated individuals without whose time and effort nothing would be possible. Please consider supporting an organization that is working hard to make a difference for all Long Islanders. When you build green - everyone profits. Vince Capogna is the chairman for USGBC-LI.

The evolving relationship of environmental consultants and the lending community - by Chuck Merritt

When Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) were first part of commercial real estate risk management, it was the lenders driving this requirement. When a borrower wanted a loan on a property, banks would utilize a list of “Approved Consultants” to order the report on both refinances and purchases.
