USGBC-LI & CMHC sponsors sustainability seminar January 25th

On Tuesday, Jan. 25, over 170 building industry professionals of all kinds braved the snow for a day of seminars. Presenting cutting edge green technologies to an enthralled audience, the speakers provided highly informative information as attendee surveys confirmed. Learning about the technologies' reduced costs, sustainability and ROI, audience members earned up to 7.5 AIA credits and 6.5 GBCI CMP credits for attending. USGBC-LI and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) co-sponsored the day of seminars. The collaboration was a natural fit, as the high profile Long Island chapter works diligently to improve the quality of the structures we build, and the environment in which we all live, while CMHC is Canada's premier housing agency and a supporter of green technology. Between meals at the Carlyle on the Green, the day's events began with Gerald Van Decker, CEO of RenewABILITY Energy Inc., explaining, "Cost Effective Energy Savings with Drain Water Heat Recovery." Water heating often consumes the second largest energy load in buildings. Now the heat energy in drain water can be safely and cost effectively recovered, streaming through multiple coiled pipes wrapped in parallel on an inner copper drain pipe to preheat the incoming cold fresh water. The day ended with sustainable cocktails, a monthly open networking forum for professionals to share ideas. Sipping drinks and sharing their thoughts on everything they learned, attendees received their AIA and GBCI CMP credits as more than one satisfied participant noted, "It was awesome!"

When Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) were first part of commercial real estate risk management, it was the lenders driving this requirement. When a borrower wanted a loan on a property, banks would utilize a list of “Approved Consultants” to order the report on both refinances and purchases.
