The Simons Center

URS Corporation has been selected to perform construction management services for a major research facility for the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook.  The facility is the $30 million Simons Center for Geometry and Physics. The architect for the project is Perkins Eastman.

The Simons Center is a new six-story, 39,000 s/f academic building that will house a research institute.  Located between two older buildings housing the physics and math departments on the university's main campus, it will include 35 faculty offices and space for supporting staff, a faculty commons room, conference rooms, a 250-seat lecture hall, an 80-100-seat seminar room, a café/kitchen unit and an atrium.  The facility is being designed to meet LEED silver-level certification standards.

As construction manager, URS will be responsible for both design-phase services - including project document review for constructability, estimating services, and assistance with value engineering initiatives - and construction-phase services - including managing the bid process, construction contracts, and LEED services, as well as project closeout and warranty process.  The center is expected to be completed in 2010 at an estimated construction cost of $30 million.

The Simons Center is the third major research facility on which URS was selected to provide construction management on the Stony Brook campus.
