Tempco Glass Fabrication celebrates "Grand Opening"of 20,000 s/f newly refurbished and outfitted facility in Flushing

Tempco Glass Fabrication, New York's new manufacturer, celebrated the "Grand Opening" of its factory on March 22th. With 75 guests in attendance, including several notable elected officials, the ribbon was cut to officially open the 20,000 s/f newly refurbished and outfitted facility located at 131-10 Maple Ave. Located in Queens, Tempco provides trade customers in N.Y.C., Long Island and the surrounding metro area with a variety of glass fabrication services including tempering, cutting, drilling, notching and edge polishing. A featured speaker and the lead ribbon cutter at the midday event was Queens borough president Helen Marshall. The borough president's remarks expressed delight that Tempco was making a major investment and creating jobs in Queens. She noted that glass will be needed for the Queens Borough Hall atrium and hoped that Tempco would be one of the bidders for that upcoming work. Joining borough president Marshall at the ribbon cutting were U.S. congresswoman Grace Meng, NY state senator Toby Ann Stavisky and NY state assemblyman Ron Kim. Welcoming guests and speaking on behalf of Tempco was the company's general manager Steven Powell. He provided the audience with an explanation of the glass tempering process that uses heat to create stronger and safer glass and information on the extensive use of tempered glass in many building, vehicle, furniture and other applications throughout our modern life. Powell also noted that Tempco's opening definitely flies in the face of traditional thinking that manufacturing in N.Y.C. is dead. "I am extremely proud that Tempco is now officially open for business. Since our launch a few short months ago, we have renovated the building, installed production machinery, constructed office space and set up computers and software systems," said Powell. "We are now ready to provide glass shops and glaziers throughout the New York Metro Area with the high quality competitively priced services they need and deserve. New York City manufacturing is alive and well at Tempco Glass Fabrication and those who think otherwise should come to Flushing and see for themselves." Currently the company has 10 employees but plans to employ a workforce of 25 to 30 when it reaches full operation. The expected total investment in plant, equipment and vehicles will ultimately exceed several million dollars. At full operation the facility will produce 12,000 s/f to 15,000 s/f of tempered glass per day. The 20,000 s/f industrial space occupied by Tempco was extensively renovated in recent months. A 1,300 s/f office space was constructed, electrical systems in the building were upgraded, lighting and heating improvements were made and a large sound attenuation room was built to house the tempering operations' blower fans and motors.
