Suffolk IDA approves Project Patriot: Orbic Electronics to launch advanced electronics manufacturing hub

Hauppauge, NY The Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has approved a major investment to support Orbic Electronics Manufacturing LLC in launching “Project Patriot,” a bold initiative to return high-tech electronics manufacturing to Suffolk County.

The project, representing a total investment of more than $107 million, is expected to initially create 503 jobs in the first two years, with the potential to exceed 1,000 new jobs over five years, expanding the region’s advanced manufacturing sector.

Project Patriot centers on the construction of a 75,000 s/f addition to 555 Wireless Blvd. This is in addition to an existing 70,000 s/f  building that is being converted to manufacturing, transforming a previously underutilized facility into an electronics assembly operation.

The company’s mission is to “onshore” manufacturing and assembly work currently conducted overseas in India and China, establishing a permanent domestic base for production of Orbic’s flagship products, ranging from smartphones and tablets to routers, laptops, wearables, and hotspots.

As a result of this addition, announced in December 2023, Orbic’s total investment in Suffolk County surged from an originally planned $30.8 million to the current $107 million.

“Project Patriot will return critical manufacturing to Suffolk County while creating hundreds of skilled jobs and strengthening U.S. supply chain security. We will be proud to set ourselves apart from the competition by having Made in America on our products.” said Mike Narula, CEO and founder of Orbic. “We are grateful to the Suffolk County IDA for helping us take this transformative step toward building a smarter, stronger, and more sustainable Orbic here in New York.”

Founded and headquartered in New York, Orbic is a MWBE-owned electronics and communications technology company that currently supplies products to major clients, such as Verizon. With the growing demand for U.S.-based assembly, Orbic is positioning itself as a domestic manufacturing leader with a long-term commitment to Long Island.

The project involves the installation of advanced production lines — including SMT (Surface Mount Technology) and DIP (Dual In-line Package) systems — requiring specialized automation, optical inspection, soldering, reflow, and materials handling equipment. These technologies will help enable Orbic to manufacture an anticipated five million units annually at full capacity.

The IDA-supported initiative will not only provide an economic boost to Suffolk County but also will invest directly in local workforce development. All newly hired employees will receive extensive technical training across such disciplines as system management, engineering, sales and marketing, and operations. The company, which will operate two daily shifts, is committed to providing all training at no cost to employees.

“This is exactly the kind of high-impact, innovation-driven project the Suffolk County IDA was created to support,” said Kelly Murphy, executive director of the Suffolk County IDA. “Orbic’s Project Patriot will bring critical manufacturing back to Long Island while retaining and creating jobs for Suffolk County residents.”

The project is expected to benefit numerous Long Island-based suppliers and technology vendors while reinforcing Suffolk County’s role in the resurgence of American manufacturing.

The evolving relationship of environmental consultants and the lending community - by Chuck Merritt

When Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) were first part of commercial real estate risk management, it was the lenders driving this requirement. When a borrower wanted a loan on a property, banks would utilize a list of “Approved Consultants” to order the report on both refinances and purchases.
