Italian eatery Mappamondo has found its way back home. For most of the '90s, Mappamondo was a West Village gem locals would visit for authentic Italian fare at a reasonable price. After shutting down and leaving Manhattan in 1999 to pursue other ventures, restaurant owner Claudio Gottard has decided to re-open the once acclaimed restaurant in its old location at 11 Abingdon Sq.
"I love the West Village and have had opportunities to open elsewhere, but I never wanted to," said Gottard, a native of the Lake Como area of Italy. "And what are the chances that you can open Mappamondo in the same location with the same name?" Jason Turner and Anna Rhein, of Zelnik and Co., completed the lease on behalf of the tenant and the landlord. Gottard signed a ten year lease for 1,650 s/f. The asking rent for the space was $9,000 per month. The restaurant will be open for business later this month.
Claudio also owns the popular Westchester bar and grill, The Globe, as well as another Mappamondo in Bedford Hills, N.Y.
