Project management firm Levien & Company has completed a 9,530 s/f capital improvement project for the West Side Montessori School - a preeminent early childhood school serving 210 children at 309 West 92nd St. in Manhattan, in a landmarked building that dates to the 1930s. The project team also replaced 600 s/f of roofing and re-pointed the five-story building's north façade.
"The school asked us to refurbish all of its classroom space using environmentally sustainable materials while preserving the original craftsmanship. In addition we were asked to complete re-pointing and roof work to make the building watertight - all before the end of the summer vacation," said Daphne Poser, project manager at Levien & Company. "The client understood the complexity of its request, helped us prepare well in advance and participated fully in the project - and the team did a terrific job."
The design features new millwork, plumbing and appliances in all eight classrooms, each of which has a unique layout, along with new light fixtures and interior finishes. Original details were restored, including a fireplace with a six-foot-long frieze above the mantelpiece. The gymnasium floor was replaced, as well as all of the windows on the south façade. New, code compliant power and low-voltage risers were installed to ensure that the school could safely expand its power and cabling use in the future.
The project team included Rasmussen Architects, general contractor J.R M. Construction Management, LLC, and Juno Contracting Corp. for the exterior work.
