EP Engineering provides MEP engineering services for the new St. Luke in the Fields Center in Greenwich Village
Manhattan, NY EP Engineering, a New York City–based engineering firm, is providing full mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services for the new St. Luke in the Fields Center, a 5,000 s/f purpose-built facility designed to support the church’s expanding outreach and community programming. EP Engineering is collaborating on the project with BKSK Architects and the project stakeholders.
The center is designed to host a wide range of activities, from large-scale community dinners and music performances to tutoring programs and neighborhood initiatives. At its heart is a flexible assembly space for more than 200 people, supported by a commercial-grade kitchen.
That diversity of use shaped every aspect of the engineering. Occupancy in the assembly space can shift dramatically from one event to the next, calling for mechanical systems that perform equally well for a small gathering or a full house, while maintaining the acoustical comfort and thermal stability that music performances demand. And because the low-scale building sits within the Greenwich Village Historic District, energy-efficient HVAC systems had to be integrated within tight space constraints without compromising the architectural intent.
“The St. Luke in the Fields Center is a building with many jobs to do,” said Joe Vieitez, PE, partner at EP Engineering. “On any given day it might host a tutoring session, a community dinner, or a concert, and its systems need to perform just as well for each of them. Working alongside BKSK Architects, our team designed MEP systems that adapt to those changing demands quietly and efficiently while respecting the character of a historic Greenwich Village setting. We’re proud to support a facility that will serve this neighborhood for generations.”
EP Engineering’s design includes high-efficiency HVAC systems that provide flexible temperature control and superior indoor air quality across fluctuating occupancy levels, along with advanced ventilation strategies that support assembly use while optimizing energy performance and occupant comfort. The team fully coordinated the commercial kitchen exhaust and make-up air systems, integrating them seamlessly into the architectural design within a compact footprint. Plumbing systems were engineered for reliability, accessibility, and code compliance to serve large public gatherings.
Through the thoughtful integration of high-performance MEP systems, EP Engineering is helping deliver a resilient, efficient, and community-focused building that will serve St. Luke in the Fields’ mission for decades to come.
