Basaran Grinder Corp. to invest $35 million for expansion in Hauppauge

Hauppauge, NY 40-year-old Hauppauge-based manufacturer of precision-grinding machines founded by an MIT-trained physicist plans to invest $35 million in an expansion that will triple its space, allowing it to grow its workforce by 25% and retain 23 jobs on Long Island.

The company, Basaran Grinder Corp., a family-owned manufacturer that has operated since 1987, received approval from the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency at its Aug. 13 meeting.

Basaran, which designs, engineers, manufactures, and supports high-precision CNC grinding machines and automated manufacturing systems for the aerospace, defense, power generation, medical, and cutting tool industries, plans to buy a 30,000 s/f building at 160 Oser Ave., and add 25,000 s/f to its current nearby facility at 100 Laser Ct.

Murat Basaran, the company’s founder and president, said the expansion is being driven by increased demand from the aerospace, defense, and power generation industries, as well as growing demand for domestically manufactured machine tools and precision-ground components.

In addition to the Oser Ave. acquisition, the project will include renovation and modernization of building systems and investment in advanced manufacturing equipment and automation, and improvements to the 100 Laser Ct. facility, including machinery upgrades, manufacturing floor improvements, parking lot reconstruction, and solar energy infrastructure.

The company’s grinders, of which it is the sole domestic supplier, have an accuracy of 1 micron and are used in gas turbines and jet engines. A micron, which equals one-millionth of a meter (0.000039 inches), is invisible to the naked eye and 100 times smaller than a strand of hair.

“The additional space and infrastructure will allow Basaran to increase production capacity, improve workflow, reduce lead times, and support larger customer programs,” Basaran said. “The project will support the retention of Basaran’s existing workforce and create new jobs in engineering, machining, assembly, automation, software development, project management, and technical support.

The project will support the retention/creation of 29 jobs in engineering, machining, assembly, automation, software development, project management, and technical support.

“Basaran Grinder Corp. is deeply committed to Suffolk County and to strengthening domestic machine tool manufacturing from its Long Island headquarters,” said Basaran.

Basaran considered sites in Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Texas, where it said building costs and taxes are lower.

“We’re pleased to support Basaran’s investment, which will expand the company’s manufacturing capabilities, create high-quality jobs, and establish a long-term manufacturing campus that supports future growth in Suffolk County,” said Kelly Murphy, executive director of the IDA.
