2026 Women in Commercial Real Estate: Varuna Bhattacharyya, Seyfarth Shaw LLP

Seyfarth Shaw LLP
What was the most rewarding project or deal you’ve worked on in the past 12 months, and why?
One of my most rewarding transactions was a complex $200 million refinancing for a luxury multifamily asset in Austin, TX. It required closing within just 30 days. The accelerated timeline demanded creativity, responsiveness, and constant collaboration across the deal team. Watching attorneys, clients, and counterparties collaborate to quickly resolve issues, navigate competing priorities, and deliver a successful closing confirmed what I enjoy most about this work: solving complex challenges via teamwork and shared commitment. The transaction reflected the trust major clients give our team.
What trend or change in commercial real estate do you believe will have the biggest impact over the next five years?
Artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape the commercial real estate industry. From due diligence and document review to drafting and transaction management, many routine processes will become increasingly automated. As technology handles more of the administrative workload, the greatest value will come from professionals who can provide strategic judgment, identify risks, solve complex problems, and negotiate effectively. The industry will become faster and more efficient, but human insight and trusted advice will remain the key differentiators.
What leadership lesson has made the greatest impact on your career?
The most important leadership lesson I have learned is the value of authenticity. I initially assumed successful leaders followed a specific formula. Over time, I realized the most effective leadership comes from embracing your own values, strengths, and perspective. Trying to fit someone else’s mold is unsustainable. Once I became comfortable leading in a way that felt genuine to me, I was able to build stronger relationships, earn trust more naturally, and have a greater impact on both clients and colleagues. That lesson has shaped my approach to professional service and leadership roles.
What advice would you give to the next generation of women entering commercial real estate?
Believe you have something valuable and unique to contribute. Many successful professionals experience imposter syndrome, but that inner voice shouldn’t define your potential. Focus on building a reputation for excellence, integrity and reliability. Be willing to raise your hand, take on new challenges and support those around you. Seek out mentors but look too to mentor others as your career progresses. Building a strong professional network and investing in your community is as important as technical expertise. Confidence grows from experience. Hard work, resilience, and kindness open doors.
