East Meadow, NY It is with profound sadness that Certilman Balin announces the passing of Howard M. Stein, the former managing partner, esteemed colleague, mentor, and friend. Howard leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, not only in the legal profession, but throughout the many communities and charitable organizations he so passionately supported.
For decades, Howard was a respected leader at Certilman Balin, known for his sharp legal mind, unwavering integrity, and dedication to both his clients and colleagues. Throughout his distinguished career, he played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s culture of professionalism, mentorship, and collaboration. His guidance and friendship impacted generations of attorneys and staff who were fortunate to work alongside him. Howard’s clients, consisting of most of the major real estate developers in the area, regarded him as the leading real estate attorney and dealmaker on Long Island. His efforts and contributions influenced so many of the major, and smaller, developments on Long Island in this century from Hempstead to the East End.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Howard will be remembered most for his immense generosity, compassion, and commitment to giving back. He devoted countless hours to charitable and community organizations throughout his life, always seeking ways to help others and make a meaningful difference.
In recent years, Howard became deeply involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) following his own diagnosis. Even while courageously battling pancreatic cancer himself, Howard dedicated his energy to raising awareness and funding for pancreatic cancer research and treatment. Through his advocacy and fundraising efforts, he became one of PanCAN’s leading supporters, helping raise many thousands of dollars over the last few years to support patients and families facing the disease. His determination to help others, even during his own fight, reflected the strength, selflessness, and optimism that defined Howard throughout his life.
Howard’s legacy extends far beyond negotiating, structuring and closing real estate transactions. He was a trusted advisor, a mentor to many, a devoted friend, husband, father, grandfather and brother and above all, a man of tremendous heart and character. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
