2026 Women in Construction: Kathryn Montgomery, JRM Construction Management

What emerging challenge or opportunity do you see shaping the construction industry in the next few years, and how are you preparing for it? One of the biggest opportunities (and challenges) is adapting to rapid change, whether through new technologies, evolving client expectations, or workforce development. Embracing innovation while maintaining strong fundamentals will be key. I’m focused on staying adaptable, continuing to learn, and supporting my team as we integrate new tools and approaches that improve efficiency, collaboration, and project outcomes.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? Don’t be afraid to speak up, ask questions, and take up space. You don’t need to know everything on day one, what matters most is curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to learn. Find mentors, trust your instincts, and remember that your perspective is valuable. Our industry needs diverse voices, and there is plenty of room for you to learn and grow. 

What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity? Evening walks with my fiancé and our pug Otto reset me — chasing sunsets and recapping our days along the West Side Highway.

What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community? One of the initiatives I’m most excited about is the continued evolution of how our teams collaborate across disciplines to deliver complex projects more efficiently and thoughtfully. Whether it’s refining internal processes, strengthening client partnerships, or mentoring team members through challenging projects, the impact is felt beyond any single jobsite. It matters because it helps create an environment where teams feel supported, clients feel confident, and projects are delivered with both quality and purpose.

What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today? I wish more women knew just how many diverse and fulfilling career paths exist within construction. It’s no longer a one-dimensional industry. There are opportunities in leadership, operations, technology, sustainability, and beyond. Construction offers real responsibility early on, tangible results, and the chance to make a lasting impact on communities, which is incredibly rewarding.
