Why should this nominee be recognized in our Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight?
“In addition to being my partner for 17 years and a committed professional who has been instrumental in the growth of our firm, April Intrabartola is an advocate for young people interested in becoming part our amazing industry. She is an instinctual teacher, whom I’ve watched encourage and mentor young people over the years. Her unparalleled work ethic and passion for what she does has been instrumental to the benefit of the Eastman Cooke team and our clients.” - Peter Morandi, Chief Executive Officer, LEED AP at Eastman Cooke & Associate.
What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?
We have extensive experience in constructing healthcare facilities and a recent project, Moses Medical at 871 Westchester Ave. in the South Bronx, is now close to completion. The work on the single-story, stand-alone building entailed the construction of nine examination and diagnostic rooms, one ultrasound room, one specialty examination and treatment room, bathrooms meeting DOH requirements, conference room, reception area, nurses’ station, and staff lounge. It looks great and we are proud to be part of a project that will provide great benefits to the community.
Which professional organization(s) would you recommend to women just starting out in your industry: As a long-time member of the Commercial Real Estate Women’s Network (CREW), I appreciate the camaraderie and professional contacts embodied by the group. CREW offers a range of mentorship opportunities, too. For women new to the construction industry, Professional Women in Construction (PWC) offers terrific networking events and educational programs. For those based in Long Island, Women Economic Developers of Long Island (WEDLI) is an amazing network. All three are established groups that welcome women just starting out in commercial real estate.
What are the most important factors young women should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with?
It is important to research a company’s website and social media platforms to see if their business profile interests you. The various platforms will also identify whether a company offers mentorship and/or educational programs to support career growth. If you enjoy what you do, then you will be motivated to do your best work – and succeed!
Who inspires you most? What qualities do they possess that inspire you?
To this day, my father continues to inspire me! He was a great mentor who taught me the nuances of the construction industry. Although no longer active in the industry, he is the consummate entrepreneur who is always open to helping people achieve. Many years ago, when I made the decision to switch careers from teacher to contractor, he was a great listening board who encouraged me to make my own decisions. It is that kind of inspiration and encouragement I try to pay forward everyday.
