Hauppauge, NY The Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (SCIDA) has preliminarily approved a transaction to support Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc. in retaining and improving their existing global headquarters at 210 N. Service Rd. With the SCIDA’s support, Leviton will commit to a lease extension agreement and invest more than $2 million to renovate and enhance its existing 156,000 s/f facility and retain their 414-person workforce with an annual payroll of more than $55 million.
“Leviton is a household name and has been growing alongside our regional economy for more than a century,” said Kelly Murphy, Suffolk County IDA’s CEO & executive director. “We are excited to incentivize their lease extension and support the new investments into their existing headquarters that will improve their operations and, more importantly, keep the company and its hundreds of employees here in Suffolk County.”
Founded in 1906 in New York City, Leviton Manufacturing Co. is a manufacturer of electrical wiring equipment. Leviton manufactures a range of products, such as GFCIs, receptacles, switches, dimmers (including smart devices), LED lighting, lighting controls (including occupancy sensors), copper and fiber cabling systems, and various other electrical products. Its product range comprises more than 25,000 devices and systems utilized across residential, commercial, and industrial markets.
In June 2009, with the assistance of the Suffolk IDA, Leviton relocated its global headquarters to Melville, and invested $20 million in the building with support from and utilized Suffolk County Businesses. Leviton’s operations at this location encompass product testing, research and development, executive offices, marketing, human resources, supply chain, and finance. Leviton is an international company with facilities around the United States and globally. Despite existing economic incentives being granted at their facilities in competing jurisdictions, with the continued assistance of the IDA, Leviton will renew their expiring lease in Melville through 2033. The planned investments will cover renovations to the facility, acquisition of research and development test equipment, and enhancements to the IT infrastructure.
“The Suffolk IDA has consistently proven to be an exceptional team to collaborate with, and the support they offer has been invaluable to us remaining in Melville,” said Caroline Kispert, senior director of risk management & real estate at Leviton.
“We are grateful for the assistance and overall direction they have provided us throughout this process. It is safe to say that we look forward to further growth on Long Island, thanks to their support.”
Leviton Manufacturing, along with its subsidiaries and affiliates, operates in more than 85 countries across six continents. The company has a workforce of approximately 6,500 individuals, with a presence in 60 locations worldwide. Furthermore, Leviton has operations in ten other locations across the United States.
At present, the company has 414 employees in Melville, with average annual salaries of more than $133,000. This project will enable the company to stay on Long Island, retaining over 400 existing jobs, while also paving the way for the company to continue innovating in its industry. In addition, Leviton Manufacturing is a proud supporter of SCIDA’s “Long Island First Policy,” which prioritizes in-community spending and supports Long Island-based businesses. Throughout the project’s duration and upon its conclusion, they will persist in providing support to Long Island businesses and vendors, with an estimated projected economic impact from such spending on Long Island of $727,000 per year.
