Why should women consider a career in construction? The real question is why shouldn’t women consider a career in construction. The true measure of succeeding in our industry is communication, planning, dedication and execution of an idea. From the building of a family to the greatest moments in our history, women were responsible for building the foundation of prosperity. When we didn’t have a voice of our own, we were the support and the sounding boards for those decision makers. Now that our voices are heard, we have the ability to drive change with our unique prospective. So, I ask, why shouldn’t women consider a career in construction?
Starting out in the construction business, who or what empowered you? I started by chance, looking for a job near my new home. I was fortunate to find Enviroscience, a company where individuals not only work together but support and encourage one another. Glenn Neuschwender, president, made me understand that strong competences endure and translate over industries vs experience only. He encouraged me to lean on what I know instead of what I didn’t when I was out of my comfort zone. Along with John Driscoll and Bart Gallagher’s support, partners, I felt empowered to take leadership roles and make decisions based on my abilities without hesitation or fear of failure.
What advice would you offer to other women getting into the construction industry? Have no fear. Ignore the stereotypes and presumptions that this is a man’s world. The construction industry is open to innovation, creativity and change. It is an industry where focused and responsible professionals can thrive in it. Ask questions when you don’t know. Voice opinions when you do know, and just start building your next step.
