List 2-3 real estate associations or organizations that you are currently a member of:
- MBA (Mortgage Bankers Association)
- Colgate Real Estate Council
What recent project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of closing the $42 million Reunion Resort refinance in Feb. 2022. I led the underwriting and worked with Dan Gorczycki to arrange the financing. It was challenging to find the right lender to finance a major hospitality asset during the depths of COVID. Additionally, the asset posed its own challenges due to the unique collateral involved which included hotel units, condos, timeshares, resort memberships, and third-party management. Ultimately, creating a cohesive yet digestible underwriting that resulted in financing with terms in line with the sponsor’s sophisticated business plan was a hugely rewarding accomplishment.
Who was/is your mentor and how did s/he influence/help you in your career?
I joined Colgate University’s Real Estate Council (CREC) during my sophomore year of college and the advice I received from their leaders has guided my career. One of CREC’s key members, Kevin Danehy (CEO of Willow) was generous to lead several presentations which help generate my curiosity about the real estate industry. Kevin has continued to lend advice throughout my career and acted as an early sounding board when I first joined TrueRate.
How do you contribute to your community or your profession?
As part of CREC, I often speak to and meet with current students to help them learn about commercial real estate and offer advice in their pursuit of breaking into the industry. The real estate industry is much more opaque than others and college students often don’t know what opportunities are out there or how to pursue them. It’s rewarding to relay my experience, but I also enjoy learning about what areas of real estate they are interested in and why.
What led you to your current profession?
Through speaking with mentors during college, I realized there was a lot of opportunity in the real estate industry because of the diverse professions within it as well as the lack of progression compared to similar industries. For those reasons, I was confident I would find a role suitable to my skillset and eventually had the opportunity to join an innovative and fast-growing company.
Top three things on your bucket list:
I am an avid traveler, but I haven’t made it to Japan yet, so number one on my bucket list is to visit Japan and ski at Niseko. In that vein, my second item is to scuba dive the SS Thistlegorm wreck in the Egyptian sea. The last item on my bucket list is to teach at a university during my retirement because I think it would be a fulfilling way to finish a career and help pass on the things I have learned along the way.
