Why should women consider a career in construction?
Opportunities in the construction industry are endless and it makes so much sense to encourage both men and women to enter the field. Projects in construction continue to get more interesting as clients strive for the best cutting-edge technology and trending finishes. Construction has allowed me to develop my problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills, and work with very diverse and riveting professionals. I have benefited tremendously from the industry as these skills also enhance my personal life and open up a wide variety of possibilities for my career.
Who within your own firm has helped you succeed within the construction industry?
I have been very fortunate to have great role models in my company—both women and men. My supervisor has encouraged the development of my skills and has been extremely supportive by giving me great exposure and allowing me to own my work. I’ve enjoyed working with two project executives who both have calm demeanors and are great listeners. These traits are great assets when it comes to client relationships. They relay issues to the client in a calm and logical manner which makes our clients feel they are being listened to and their concerns are being addressed. Working with such talented individuals has allowed me to identify traits I want to model and skills in myself that I seek to improve.
