Name: Sandra Bragaglia
Title: Architectural Designer
Company Name: BBS Architects, Landscape Architects, & Engineers, P.C.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be an architect. When other kids were building fantastical things with their Legos, I was building floor plans.
In the past year, what project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?
I designed a field house that houses a press box, concession area and toilets. That will be going into construction late this summer.
Who was/is your mentor and how did s/he influence/help you in your career?
My co-worker Karalisa is my mentor. Karalisa is a woman in a profession largely dominated by men. Karalisa has not only taught me a lot regarding construction but, also how to make sure I don’t get taken advantage of professionally. I have utilized several things she has shown me and hope to keep learning more from her.
What trends will dominate your industry in the coming months?
Net Zero. Designing buildings that are more sustainable and use less resources.
What led you to your current profession?
I was always interested in art and math. I loved the process of creating something and seeing it come to life before my eyes. Architecture is that same process.
How do you contribute to your community or profession?
I do quite a bit of community outreach through the office and on my own. I organize a food drive at Thanksgiving and toy drive around the holidays. We donate food to a local church and toys to Stonybrook Children’s Hospital. BBS Partner’s and employees are the biggest contributors when I participate in Cupid’s Undie Run every year. That event raises funds to find a cure for Neurofibromatosis. I also am a member of Saber Guild - Endor Temple. We raise funds for Stonybrook Children’s hospital by performing choreographed lightsaber battles at events and Conventions.
What books or social media influencers would you recommend to other women?
Frank Lloyd Wright: Unpacking the Archive
