What was your greatest professional accomplishment in 2020?
Being able to keep all of our staff working safely through the pandemic, without even one incident of a COVID-19 infection. Our construction operations proceeded uninterrupted at McAlpine’s largest current project, the $75 million 250,000 s/f, 350 Clarkson Ave. residential development by The Hudson Cos. in Brooklyn. This project was considered essential and we managed up to 200 laborers on site daily, under continuous safety compliance supervision by the DOB. We employed a monitor and four cleaners to continuously sanitize the site, protect our personnel, and maintain the project’s schedule. The property received the TCO and we turned it over to ownership with minimal COVID-19 delays. Protecting the health of our team and families, while saving jobs and successfully delivering projects for clients was incredibly satisfying.

What was your most notable project, deal, or transaction in 2020?
McAlpine’s most significant project this year was The Lois, a mixed-use residential and retail development by The Hudson Cos. at 350 Clarkson Ave. in Brooklyn. We successfully delivered the 250,000 s/f, $75 million ground-up project to the client without any significant COVID-related delays this November, despite work restrictions caused by the pandemic and the project utilizing new technologies never before employed in New York City. The 250-unit multi-family structure with a 6,000 s/f ground-floor retail section features a very innovative pre-fabricated panel exterior wall that served as this technology’s pilot project for large-scale construction undertakings. In addition, the building is pursuing a high-level LEED certification. We managed the construction work with strict COVID-19 safety measures, which resulted in zero infections among the project team.
