USGBC-LI will host its awards program for green building, sustainable communities, and municipal leadership. The awards program will recognize leaders of the green building movement for their use of sustainable, innovative practices in projects of all sizes, located in either Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Projects located in other areas but designed by firms based on Long Island will also be considered, and municipalities will also be recognized for their advances in green building and smart growth concepts. "Projects will be assessed for their innovation in green building, high performance in sustainability, resource efficiencies, indoor air quality, overall design, social equity and user-friendly considerations," said Glynis Berry, a chapter board member and the organizer of the program. "Our aim is to increase awareness of green building, share successful solutions and recognize local efforts," said Berry. The contest will be judged by James Russell, AIA, an architect and prolific writer who serves as an architectural critic for Bloomberg and was an editor at Architectural Record for 18 years. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and Metropolis magazine. Also judging the contest will be Steven Winter, AIA, an architect whose firm, Steven Winter Associates, specializes in energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. The program will culminate in an awards ceremony to be held on October 30 at the Costello di Borghese Vineyard in Cutchogue. The ceremony will be followed by a discussion with leaders from local municipalities about their experiences incorporating sustainability into the built environment. The deadline for entry is October 17, with October 3 the deadline for registration. The entry fee is $50 for members of USGBC-LI and $100 for non-members.
