What was your most notable project, deal, or transaction in 2019? The announcement that Canopy Growth would locate their first industrial hemp and CBD processing facility in Broome County was a significant win. As a global leader in the manufacturing of cannabis, Canopy has been an early adopter on the creation of a vibrant hemp industry in Broome County. The project, which was announced this fall is moving on schedule and I am confident that Canopy will be a magnet for supply chain companies interested in working in the hemp industry.
What are your predictions for commercial real estate in 2020?
I predict a busy year moving real estate in 2020, including new construction and the redevelopment of existing facilities. Greenfield sites such as the Charles St. Business Park in Binghamton and 600 Main St., a 27-acre urban development site which we are seeking development partnerships. In addition, our downtown urban core has historic and architecturally unique buildings well-suited for technology companies desiring a highly-educated and mobile workforce. We are also optimistic about our opportunity to attract companies looking for proximity to the Binghamton University School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences connected to Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham’s Nobel Prize winning research connected to battery technology. It is a great time to look at investment and location in Broome County.
What was your greatest professional accomplishment in 2019?
2019 was a very busy year for economic development in Broome County. We’ve seen a number of companies in the advanced manufacturing sector expand locally, including L3/Harris and Buckingham Manufacturing. These expansions signal the continued health of the manufacturing sector in the Southern Tier region. Perhaps the proudest accomplishment this year was the formation of our Leadership Alliance between Broome’s lead economic development organization, The Agency BCIDA/LDC and the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce. I am honored to have been chosen to lead this effort, which will elevate the visibility of Broome as a strategic location for business development.
