What was your most notable project, deal, transaction or professional achievement in 2018?
I was honored to be recognized by many publications, including the Commercial Observer as a 2018 “Barrier Breaker,” the New York Real Estate Journal as one of the 2018 “Women in Real Estate”, and by BISNOW as a New York Power Woman. I was most proud of the honor received by the firm’s litigation department, which I head, from the New York Law Journal as the Litigation Department of the Year-Real Estate.
What was the best decision that you made in 2018 and how did it impact your business?
The board decided to hold our first out-of-state partners’ retreat. In doing so, we had the opportunity to work offsite in a different environment, foster comradery and engender new forward- looking ideas.
What market trend(s) will impact your industry in 2019?
As the big box retail store is receding in dominance, there are many new types of shared living and work space arrangements, including retail. Though WeWork is now the largest office tenant in New York, the co-sharing concept is still a relatively new area in New York real estate, and with that, new and interesting business and legal issues are arising for owners and tenants sharing office and residential spaces, which will have a continued impact on the industry. Having worked on a number of co-sharing agreements on behalf of both owners, landlords and start-up companies, I look forward to continuing to provide our clients with guidance in this new area.
What was an unexpected event that occurred in 2018, and how did it impact your career or personal life?
I had a lot of wonderful change this year- both professional and personal - although I cannot say the events were unexpected. I sold the home that my children grew up in and moved onto a new exciting stage of my life in an apartment in the city. My daughter, who was working as an attorney in my firm, went in-house to a real-estate company and got married to a wonderful man. My son is in a master’s program at Cornell in real estate and business and will return to the city, as the place to be in real estate, when he graduates. Life is very good.
Do you have any New Year’s Resolution(s)?
Yes. My resolution is not to waste a minute of my life- they are precious and all too few.
