New Rochelle, NY EW Howell joined with faculty, students, administrators, neighbors, community and elected officials at the grand opening of Iona College’s new North Ave. Residence Hall.
Located at 715 North Ave., the seven-story, 100,000 s/f residence hall includes 7,000 s/f of retail space on the ground level. The upper six floors include accommodations for 310 students in suite-style apartments with no more than four students per suite. The new Residence Hall is designed to provide apartment-style living, including living rooms and cooking/laundry facilities, as well as common areas.
The North Ave. Residence Hall increases the quality and quantity of residential housing options for Iona students while helping to revitalize the North Ave. section of New Rochelle. The project was designed by Studio Hillier Architects and was completed on budget and in time for the new academic year.
300 students have moved into the new residence hall, which features two and four-bedroom air-conditioned suites equipped with LED lighting and high-speed Internet. Each 750 s/f suite has one and a half baths. The southern and eastern faces of the structure boast a glass wall tower housing multi-purpose lounges on each floor, and the tower’s top floor offers views of the Iona campus, New Rochelle and the Long Island Sound.
The early reviews have been great, with students commenting the new residence hall has the “vibe of an upscale apartment in the city” and is “like living in a really nice hotel.”
“Iona College is working hard to be a good neighbor to our good neighbors,” president Joseph Nyre, Ph.D., stated as the project began. “This new residence hall is a groundbreaking development on North Ave. for both Iona College and the City of New Rochelle. We celebrate our partnership with New Rochelle, in the spirit of positive town-gown relationships – working together to move our corner of the world.”
“Throughout our 125-year history, we have developed a deep understanding of the complex environment of the education sector – whether it’s public, private, higher-education or specialty – the challenges of building within each area are unique and need to be dealt with effectively,” said Jack Hagen, VP of EW Howell’s Education Construction Division. “With multiple regulatory bodies to deal with, strict budgets and firm deadlines to contend with, choosing a partner that knows the sector is an absolute must. From beautiful new residence halls such as the new Iona North Avenue Residence Hall to stadium-style auditoriums to state-of-the-art research laboratories, our hand-picked education sector teams are always ready for the next challenge.”
