New York, NY Shawmut Design and Construction has completed the new 1,500 s/f Hublot flagship at 743 5th Ave. The new location is the tallest Hublot in the world and the largest in the United States.
In collaboration with Peter Marino Architect and CallisonRTKL, Shawmut constructed this ground-up building between two preexisting buildings in a space just 19 ft. wide. The unique location of the store posed many technical challenges for the team, including running new underground utilities in from 5th Ave.
“Completing ground-up construction of a new building sandwiched between two operating luxury retail flagships made this project one of the most complex and challenging we have completed in the N.Y. area,” said Greg Skalaski, director of retail at Shawmut. “It was a great experience for the company to give life to Hublot’s new boutique concept that will now be replicated at Hublot locations around the world.”
The new store features an 85-ft. powder-coated black aluminum façade that was fabricated in Germany and illuminated with LED lights, designed to resemble a timepiece wristband. The space features built-in custom millwork, custom freestanding displays fabricated in Switzerland, black lava stone imported from France, and “shadow-less” LCD vitrine windows. Newly-introduced metal ceiling panels fabricated in Germany are undoubtedly a highlight of the space. Granite-colored furnishing and stainless steel fixtures were used to evoke the brand’s innovative and luxurious trademarks.
The new flagship is the second Hublot location built by Shawmut in N.Y. and marks the 48th project they have built on 5th Ave.
Shawmut’s New York team has also recently completed the $180 million renovation of the InterContinental New York Barclay, as well as work on The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the NBA Store flagship on 5th Ave.
