New York, NY SL Green Realty Corp., New York City’s largest commercial property owner, has partnered with the National Hockey League (NHL) to collect and donate used sporting equipment to local schools and non-profit organizations.
SL Green will set up NHL regulation-size goal nets, which will become equipment donation drop-boxes, in 10 of its Manhattan properties reaching over 9 million s/f.
“SL Green is proud to be a part of the ’Recycle the Game’ initiative,” said Elizabeth Majkowski, acting director of sustainability and senior vice president, operations. “This program creates positive opportunities for children who can be empowered through sports and for tenants who can divert waste from landfills and give back to the community.”
Ice Hockey in Harlem is the recipient organization of all used hockey equipment, and these efforts will help NYC youth learn a sport that would otherwise be financially unavailable to them. PowerPlay NYC will accept all other sporting equipment which will then be distributed among city public schools with limited resources.
Sarah Geisenheimer, executive director of the fund for Public Schools, issued the following statement on ‘Recycle the Game’: “It’s thrilling to see organizations volunteer their time and energy to help NYC public schools. This program provides young New Yorkers with the tools they need to stay active, while also improving the environmental quality of our neighborhoods.”
“’Recycle the Game’ helps to keep equipment out of attics and out of landfills, and puts the gear in the hands of those who can benefit the most,” said Omar Mitchell, vice president of social responsibility at the NHL.
