Melville, NY John McIlhargy, director of sports development at H2M, was re-elected general chairman of Metropolitan Swimming Inc. Metropolitan Swimming Inc. is one of the largest governing bodies for competitive swimming in the United States with nearly 12,000 athletes and coaches, 90 club members and representing over 26,000 contributing families. Affiliate members include YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, NYC Parks and Master Swimming (open water partners).
Metro Swimming is also one of the largest non-profit sports groups in New York with its mission to promote, develop and improve competitive swimming through education, support and opportunities for participation to a diverse swimming community. As the Local Swimming Committee of USA Swimming (USOC), Metro sanctions hundreds of events annually and as one of the oldest swimming governing bodies is proud to claim great success in developing many Olympic and World Championship athletes. New York is arguably the birthplace of American Competitive swimming and has a great history in the sport from people like Gertrude Ederle, Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan), Eleanor Holm and Diana Nyad to name a few.
This is an Olympic year and Metro will be sending 41 or more athletes to the United States Olympic Trials. Metropolitan members serve swimmers from Learn-To-Swim to the Olympics with additional programs for Diversity and Inclusion in Sports, Disabilities, Coach and Safety Education. Metro members operate in nearly every public and private indoor pool within our geographic region as well as many of our outdoor facilities.
