H2M completes renovations on 2,550 s/f historic Merrick Library
May 19, 2008 - Long Island
H2M, a multi-disciplined architectural and engineering service firm recently completed work on the Historic Merrick Library. H2M was retained to perform renovations and alterations to the historic wing building. The original building which was constructed in the 1880s was significantly damaged by fire in 2005.
Aside from the fire damage, there had been many aesthetic modifications made through the years. After a review and presentation to the Town Landmarks Commission, H2M recommended that the building should be restored to its original grandeur. This is particularly evident in some of the details used in the renovation such as historically accurate doors and windows, some of which were recycled during the demolition process, as well as the interior finishes used in the Parlor.
Not compromising on the use of newer materials, and with an eye towards sustainability, products such as recycled cotton insulation and non VOC paints were used to promote healthy indoor air quality.
"Since I was born and raised in Merrick, that was my community library and it was very gratifying to see the building restored for the community," said Robert Scheiner, A.I.A., senior vice president at H2M. His staff worked on the rehabilitation of the historic wing which will now be used as a community center.
