What year did you start your career in commercial real estate: 1985
What recent project or transaction are you most proud of?
I was proud to initially open my own business, and achieve certification as a Minority/Woman-owned Business Enterprise nearly two decades ago. Both have allowed JRT Realty Group to become what is now the largest M/WBE commercial real estate company in the country. A more recent accomplishment, perhaps one of the crowning achievements of JRT's history, has been serving as the co-exclusive leasing agent of One World Trade Center. The new 104-story, 3 million s/f office tower is the tallest in the Western Hemisphere and a signature address for business, recognized around the world. Highlighted by the opening of the building, the museum, the surrounding park and, just last week, the One World Observatory, assignments of this scope would not have been within JRT's reach had it not been for the perseverance, expertise and hard work of the firm and its professionals over the years.
What recent honor, achievement or recognition has meant the most to you and why?
I recently received the Real Estate Person of the Year Award from the Greater New York Chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). The award was meaningful to me because IREM is synonymous with education, ethics and excellence in real estate. Rather than being recognized for the number of transactions or the aggregate total square footage leased, sold or managed, this award was recognition and validation of the values that JRT has held to since its founding - a dedication to ethical business practices, the maximizing of the value of investment real estate, and the promotion of superior management through education and information sharing. For me, as the President and founder of a relatively small firm compared to the industry giants, this award was humbling. Moreover, it was gratifying to know that the IREM selection committee unanimously agreed that I was well-deserving of the award.
What has been your experience with having a mentor or being a mentor yourself?
Over my career, I have had a number of professional "champions". These key promoters include Jimmy Peters, who believed in me and in my vision for a new and unique value proposition for clients in the real estate field; Steve Siegel, who was open minded from the start and saw the potential for JRT and his organization to work collaboratively and grow together; Bruce Mosler, who was interested in JRT because he believed in supporting MWBE initiatives and diversity, and wanted C&W to be the company to promote those goals; and John Santora, who continues to support JRT and promote diversity in the real estate industry. At various points along my journey, each of these individuals showed that they were open minded in their attitudes, out of the box in their thinking, creative in their approach to business, and as early adapters, among the first to recognize the value of MWBE firms.
Who or what has been the strongest influence on your career and why?
My children have always been what has influenced my career most. They are the most important part of my life and I have always been driven to provide for them, not just financially, but in order to give them the tools and moral fortitude they need to succeed in life.
What is the first thing you do when you arrive in the office in the morning?
For me, getting ahead of things is important, so I find it best to spend some focused time checking emails, prioritizing them, and responding to all of them before the phones start to ring and the day gets moving.
What time management strategies do you find to be the most effective for you?
In addition to getting ahead of the morning email trail, I find the most effective time management skill to be my ability to multi-task throughout the day. In real estate, every day is different, so it is important for me to remain flexible, compartmentalize and change gears quickly.
What is the best advice you have received and who was it from?
The best advice I received (and have often been reminded of) is that 99.9% of the things you worry about never happen. This advice comes from my husband.
List 3 women that you would like to have drinks / dinner with and where would you go?
Eleanor Roosevelt, Katherine Hepburn, and Barbra Streisand. I would like to make them dinner at my house. Rather than going out somewhere, bringing them into my home would allow me to give back for all of the inspiration and entertainment that they have given me.
What is your favorite quote?
"When women succeed, America succeeds" Barack Obama
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A lawyer.
