Name: Jason Abbey, AIA, LEED, GRP
Title: Senior associate
Company: FXFOWLE Architects
Location: N.Y./Washington, D.C.
Birthplace: Princeton, N.J.
Education: B.A. (Art History) and master of Architecture, The University of Virginia
First job outside of real estate: Ski instructor, Steamboat, CO
First job in real estate or allied field: Carpenter's apprentice, Charlottesville, VA. Only takes a few short months to have a lasting respect for the hard work performed every day by construction professionals.
What do you do now and what are you planning for the future? I provide project leadership and management for the firm's D.C. office, and lead business development efforts in the Mid-Atlantic region. I am in the midst of relocating my family from the Upper West Side to the D.C.-metro.
How do you unwind from a busy day in real estate?
Ride my bike home. In high school I rode my bike from N.J. to Oregon and I have yet to find a better way to see a variety of places, get some exercise, and make use of cool/high tech machinery all in one shot.
Favorite book or author: "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond. Asks questions regarding the cultural development of humans and (spoiler alert!) traces our roots to the geometry of the Earth's geography.
Favorite movie: Who has time for movies?
Last song you purchased/downloaded? "Radioactive," Imagine Dragons
One word to describe your work environment: Biconfluentual (that's talkitecture for "in two locations near the coming together of rivers.")
Rules to live by in business: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" and "Work your tail off."
If you could invite one person to dinner (living or dead) who would it be and where would you go?
I'd have Yoda over and we'd grill in my back yard (maybe he could teach me to "force" clean the dishes)
What is your dream job? Besides this one? Cultural Attaché to the Mars colonies sounds pretty good but I doubt I'd live long enough to see that one through.
